Co-founder and CEO

Jose Alfaro

PhD is a chemical and environmental engineer with a doctorate in sustainability and focus on the circular economy.

He has experience in industry and academia with more than 20 years working in developing countries, several patents to his name, and 5 years in R&D at a Fortune

500 company.

Co-founder and Director of Business Development

Elisa Retana

Has an MBA from INCAE and Engineering Degrees from University of Canterbury and Universidad de Costa Rica.

She has worked with over 30 companies as a consultant to develop competitive market strategies across Latin America  and has 15 years experience in project management across three continents.

Co-founder and Director of Research and Development

Sofia Camarero

Sofia leads tech R&D for Poás. Before Poás, she performed research on the circular economy and biomass wastes upcycling systems. She has worked within the industry at multinational corporations in product R&D, manufacturing, and quality engineering.

She earned her bachelor’s in chemical engineering from the Universidad de la República and master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering and Environment and Sustainability from the University of Michigan.

Senior Engineer, Operations

Fernando Pinto

Fernando is a lead operations engineer at Poás. He has more than 10 years experience in renewable and decentralized energy. He has participated in successful solar energy startups and been a part of energy projects around Central America.

He holds an Electromechanical Engineering degree from the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica.

Junior Engineer

Rachel Kaup

Rachel is a junior engineer at Poás. She has completed research around the difficulties farmers in developing countries have with energy access and how different renewable energies, such as biomass gasification, can solve the problems of high energy costs and unreliability.

She has been working on market research and development, as well as energy modeling. She has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Chemistry from Duquesne University, and holds a master’s degree in both Chemical Engineering and the Environment and Sustainability from the University of Michigan.
